How To Fold Jeans

Jeans are one of the most popular forms of clothing in the world and have been for many decades. However, not many people know how to look after their jeans properly, meaning that many people wear out their favorite jeans very quickly through poor storage and overuse.

Another issue with jeans is that they tend to be quite large and take up a lot of space in your wardrobe or drawers, which can be annoying if you’re someone who has a lot of clothes or very little space to store everything.

The key to helping preserve your jeans and making sure you have enough space in your wardrobe or drawers is to store them correctly. It’s actually surprising how few people know the best way to store their jeans, and who simply hang them up or shove them into a drawer without thinking.

This can potentially damage your jeans, cause them to lose their shape, and make them crease which is anything you want to avoid.

In this guide we’re going to look at how to fold jeans properly to ensure that they last and have their shape preserved, helping you enjoy them for longer.

Ways to Fold Jeans

Steps to Follow

Folding Jeans

1.  The first thing you want to do when folding your jeans is to make sure the pockets are properly smoothed out.

This is because they can get scrunched up inside the jeans and become lumps which can affect the shape of the jeans and make it awkward to store them properly. To do this, put your hand in the pockets and push them out so that they are fully spread open inside the jeans.

This ensures that they stay open and don’t bunch up when you come to fold them, making your folds uneven.

2.  Hold the jeans up and shake them out a few times. Ideally, you want to hold them by the waistband and keep the seams together to ensure the jeans stay evenly distributed and don’t lose their shape as you shake them out.

Go for a large even shake to ensure the jeans stay even and wrinkles and creases or debris are dislodged.

3. Fold one leg of the jeans over the other, lining them up so that the seams of the jeans remain on the outside of the fold.

Not doing this will create wrinkles and make folding more difficult. You can also choose whether you want to fold so that the front of the jeans are folded over, or the back, it doesn’t make a huge difference and is really personal preference.

As long as you ensure they line up correctly it doesn’t matter.

4.  Now you should check the crotch of the jeans under the legs, and make sure that the jeans here aren’t folded or creased as the material can bunch up and become troublesome when you try to fold. Smooth these out and untuck any unwanted folds.

You’ll know the crotch is correctly prepared as it should protrude a little from the outline of the jeans as the contour of the jeans here is very dramatic to accommodate your waist and thighs which are the thickest part of the body.

5.  Now you can fold the jeans again, either folding them up in halves or thirds depending on how you need to fit them into your drawers.

If there is a lot of space for them, you can fold the hem of the leg up to the waistband, effectively halving the size of the jeans and creating a nice flat fold that packs very well.

If this won’t fit into your storage space, you may need to third them, in which case you can fold the hems halfway up the leg, then smooth it out, then fold it again up to the waistband, and smoothing to get a triple fold which is smaller in surface area but a little deeper.

This means you can fit the jeans in slightly smaller spaces.

7.  Once this is done, whichever number of folds you’ve chosen, you can carefully lift the jeans and place them into your drawers carefully, ensuring there is a flat surface to lay them onto and that they aren’t scrunched as you close the drawer.

Storage Methods

Storing jeans can be difficult as they’re quite sizable, but there are tips and tricks you can use to maximize your space no matter how many pairs of jeans you own.

Alternate the waistbands

This method can create a lot of space, by alternating how you lay the jeans into your drawers. The waistband of the jeans is often very thick compared to the rest of the material, so alternating the jeans as you lay them inside drawers can open up a lot of extra space for you and make it easier to take jeans out or find that old pair from ages ago.

Sort into colors and styles

Sorting your jeans into stacks of colors/styles can make it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for, and helps avoid rummaging through piles of jeans and undoing all the good work of folding them up nicely.

Hang your jeans

While some people may find this damaging or inefficient, sometimes hanging jeans that get used very regularly is the best way to keep them, as it makes them easily available and helps creases from constant use drop out with gravity overnight or when not in use.

Use a hanger that has clips to grip the jeans, and don’t use a hanger that requires you to fold the jeans as this can make the jeans lose their shape and crease them badly.

Arrange your jeans in rows

To make it even easier to find your jeans in a drawer, consider organising them into rows so you can easily pick out what color and style you want without having to dig through other pairs of unwanted jeans to get to them.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, folding jeans isn’t as difficult as you might think. Follow the simple steps outlined above and you’ll be able to keep your jeans in great condition while in storage for years to come.
